Why is ‘doomspending’ on the rise? | Sean Monahan
If everyone is spending like there won’t be a tomorrow, there probably won’t be a tomorrow Doom is the prefix du jour. Doomscrolling, doomposting, doomsplaining, doomspreading. Doom joins other recent suffixes -maxxing, -pilled, and -slop – giving discussions about contemporary life an overtly negative cast. Doomspending, in particular, is a new term for spending frivolously with no concern for future financial consequences. It has become synonymous with the declining fortunes of young westerners. A survey by Credit Karma, a consumer fintech company, published in the fall of 2024, introduced the concept and the general parameters around it. Chronically online youth had begun coping with anxiety about the economy and world events with retail therapy. They claim 27% of Americans doomspend to deal with stress. The numbers rise to 37% of gen Z and 39% of millennials. Continue reading...

Trump has made our K-shaped economy even worse | Steven Greenhouse
While wealthy Americans hail a booming stock market, the rest of us worry about rising inflation and people struggling to make ends meet In case you’re not familiar with the concept of the K-shaped economy , it’s an important idea that captures a lot about Trump’s America. Wealthy Americans are represented by the line of the K that angles sharply upward to the right, while the line of the K that dips downward represents non-rich Americans and the difficulties they face. The economy’s K-shape has been growing worse in recent months, in large part because of Donald Trump’s policies. The wealthy people’s line is climbing further upward, while the line for the non-wealthy – the vast majority of Americans – has fallen further. Continue reading...

SpaceX aims for world’s largest IPO amid fears it is ‘significantly overvalued’ – business live
Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news SpaceX’s $1.75trn is ‘stratospherically high’, warns Michael Hewson , senior market analyst at iForex , which might put some investors off taking part in the IPO: In what looks set to be one of the most hotly anticipated IPOs in years, SpaceX is set to blast off on 12th June as it looks to raise up to $75bn from investors at $135 a share, which would value the company at an eye-popping $1.75trn. This eye watering valuation looks set to see the business included in the Nasdaq with many questioning how anyone can justify such a stratospheric valuation at this level of fixed price, even before the book building process has started. “We think the company has been significantly overvalued and investors will have opportunities to buy the stock at more attractive levels after the IPO.” 8.30am BST: Eurozone construction PMI for May 9am BST: UK new car sales data for May 9.30am BST: UK construction PMI for May 10.30am BST: US ‘Challenger’ jobs cuts data for May 1.30pm BST: US weekly ‘initial claims’ jobless data Continue reading...

‘Happiness is not just about GDP’: ambitious plan or utopia?
Some will question its credibility. But the alternative future to the one imagined in the World Justice Report is far more bleak • Academics set out sweeping vision for planetary survival In our increasingly dystopian world, who wouldn’t want to at least be open to a utopian antidote? The World Justice Report, published on Thursday, outlines how to build a prosperous, equitable world within safe planetary boundaries. It’s a push from the modern eco-socialist left in a global battle for ideas that will shape the future. Based on past social achievements and future energy transformation, it indicates that the overwhelming majority of people on the planet could, by the end of the century, work less and earn more while keeping temperatures down and avoiding much of the current destruction of nature. It is an ambitious, comprehensive and upbeat plan, and a stronger argument around which to build a political campaign than abstract goals of “net zero” or “decarbonisation”. Continue reading...

Top programmers and developers are being offered compensation packages worth hundreds of millions of dollars to switch firms, while young engineers lucky enough to have joined leading AI startups early are contemplating retirement before age 35. Driving up the Bayshore Freeway from San Francisco International airport into the city, you pass hyper-specific billboards advertising obscure AI applications seemingly aimed at absurdly niche audiences. How can that possibly be profitable? The answer is that in a city crawling with startups, getting the right software product in front of a founder whose company could soon be worth billions of dollars is far more lucrative than using billboard space to sell burgers or laundry detergent. In an anxious capitalist democracy such as Britain, with a modern history of patchy economic success and intermittent but recurring crises over public debt, the answer may seem obvious: governments and voters always need to behave in ways that fit with the market forces that shape our economy. Andy Beckett is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...

Oil and gas prices rise as US and Iran trade strikes; UK house prices fall – business live
British house prices fell 0.6% in May, leaving them 1.7% higher than a year earlier, Nationwide reports Eurozone factories were hit by the biggest jump in input costs in four years last month. The Iran war drove up the cost of raw materials and intermediate goods, according to the latest poll of purchasing managers at European manufacturers. Although euro area manufacturers reported an expansion for a fourth successive month in May, the sector is showing signs of struggling under the weight of rising prices and supply disruptions emanating from the war in the Middle East. “A key development in May was yet another surge in energy and raw material prices, causing the largest monthly jump in firms’ costs for four years. House prices fell between April and May and are up just 1.7% in a year. It’s a valuable reminder that property investments aren’t always safe as houses. “The Nationwide House Price Index only provides a partial picture of the market, but it’s particularly timely, because it looks at prices at the point of mortgage approvals – months ahead of the completion data we get from the Office for National Statistics. Disaster of Brexit is a warning against simple solutions to hard problems | Richard Partington
Alan Milburn says youth unemployment has no quick fixes – an idea with an important lesson for those thinking about how to rejoin the EU Mainstream politicians are rarely direct. It is part of the reason why their populist counterparts thrive: they say it like it is. No nonsense. Let’s get things done. But last week Alan Milburn had a frank rebuttal: “Everybody goes for the bloody easy solution, don’t they? You can’t just go for the easy solution, OK? There are no easy solutions, guys. None. They’re all hard.” Speaking at the launch of his review into Britain’s youth worklessness crisis , the former Labour cabinet minister was arguing that one tax U-turn could not fix a problem decades in the making. ‘I want my life back’: drugs shortages lay bare economic impact of diamond crash in Botswana
Healthcare should be free but lack of essential supplies has led to patients being told to buy their own medicines In late 2023, Boitumelo Mosege fell sick. Her neck swelled up, her whole body itched and she fainted frequently. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and had to give up her work as a farmer on the outskirts of Molepolole, a town about 30 miles north-west of Botswana’s capital, Gaborone. In Botswana, public healthcare is supposed to be universal and free. However, Mosege said she had only sporadically received medication since becoming ill. The 53-year-old relies on her four children’s occasional piecework (where a worker is paid a fixed rate per task or unit produced), and her mother’s 1,400 pula (£77) monthly pension, to afford 2,000 pula-worth of medication every month. In early May, she said it was three months since she had last bought medicine. Continue reading...

Inflation won Trump the presidency, but could cost him the midterms
Trump’s pursuit of policies that drive up prices, including tariffs and war, might be punished in November’s elections For such an uncannily successful politician, Donald Trump exhibits a perplexing political myopia. His most recent own-goal was endorsing Ken Paxton, a state attorney general, against four-term senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary for Senate in Texas. Trump’s endorsement helped push the ethically compromised Maga firebrand over the top, to run against popular Democrat James Talarico in November, complicating the Republicans’ chances to keep the seat. But what truly screams “I want us to lose the midterms” is what Trump is doing about inflation, which is becoming his most vulnerable issue. According to a New York Times/Siena poll of registered voters earlier in May, Trump’s approval on handling the cost of living is underwater by 42 percentage points, poorer than his rating on handling the economy (minus 31 points) and the unpopular war in Iran (minus 34 points). US inflation rose at fastest pace in three years in April as Iran war hikes up prices
Americans are growing frustrated with Trump’s handling of the economy as cost of living soars ahead of midterms US inflation increased at its fastest pace in three years in April, driven by higher energy prices amid the war with Iran, and cementing economists’ views that the Federal Reserve could hold interest rates unchanged well into next year. Surging price pressures are eroding household income and could restrain consumer spending and economic growth this quarter. Income at the disposal of households after adjusting for inflation dropped for a third straight month in April, other data showed on Thursday. Given the soaring cost of living, Americans are growing frustrated with Donald Trump’s handling of the economy. A Reuters/Ipsos survey last week showed the president’s approval rating fell to nearly its lowest level since he returned to the White House, hit by a drop in support among Republicans. Trump won the 2024 presidential election in large part because of his promise to lower inflation. Continue reading...

US PCE inflation rate hits three-year high as Iran war pushes up prices – as it happened
Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news, as number of UK ‘Neets’ hits 12-year high UK risks £125bn hit a year from youth unemployment, landmark report says We would like to hear from young people in the UK about their job hunting experience Elsewhere this morning, Labour has adopted regulations intended to prevent local councils from going bust after they make risky investments that jeopardise their finances. Ministers will be handed powers to intervene that have been dormant since 2003, the ministry of housing, communities and local government (MHCLG) said. “In Woking, Thurrock, and other councils we’ve seen poor investment decisions leaving taxpayers footing a big bill. “We can’t afford to wait until a council is on the brink of collapse to act. That’s why we want to bring in new powers so we can identify the risks and act before its too late.” “Many of Alan Milburn’s findings reflect the evidence received in our own inquiry on Youth Employment, Education and Training. We await Mr Milburn’s conclusions and recommendations, but when giving evidence to the Select Committee, he referred to the causes of the current youth employment crisis being as broad as they are deep. It’s clear that whatever his recommendations, it will require systemic change, needing a whole government approach to fix this. “We agree that this is not the so-called ‘snowflake’ generation that too many have referred to. But the urgency must be recognised. We cannot see the lives of so many young people be blighted in this way. Continue reading...

The Guardian view on Britain’s economy: to profit politically a recovery must be felt in people’s pockets | Editorial
The chancellor can point to growth and lower inflation, but weak job data, flat living standards and uncertain productivity are no reason to cheer In October 1991, the then chancellor Norman Lamont said he thought he saw some “green shoots” of recovery. He was ridiculed, as Britain was in the midst of a deep recession that it would not clamber out of until the following summer. Insouciant in the face of the scorn heaped upon him, Mr Lamont defended himself robustly, even long after the event – not least by writing letters to this newspaper. Despite this valiant defence, “green shootism” became notorious because it suggested a ruling class that was congratulating itself well before ordinary people felt a recovery. This has not stopped politicians since 2010 from claiming that Britain was bouncing back from the series of shocks it has experienced. After austerity had produced economic stagnation, George Osborne, the Tory chancellor in 2013, seized on a few quarters of growth to claim Britain was “turning a corner ”. Just months before the 2024 general election, Rishi Sunak, the Conservative prime minister, said that the country was starting to see the “ green shoots ” of recovery. Voters resoundingly rejected that claim when Labour was elected in a landslide. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? If you would like to submit a response of up to 300 words by email to be considered for publication in our letters section, please click here . Continue reading...

With oil markets nearing the danger zone, a US-Iran deal can’t come soon enough | Heather Stewart

Even if the Iran war ended today, US fuel prices aren’t likely to normalize this year
Prewar US gas prices averaged about $3 a gallon nationally – kiss that number goodbye for 2026 Sorry, US drivers, but don’t expect pump prices to return to prewar levels any time soon, even if the US and Iran agree to a lasting peace deal tomorrow. The president promised recently that relief will be swift once the war ends. “I see it going down very substantially when this is over, I think very rapidly too, at levels that you’ve never seen,” he said.
